Man proposes to deaf girlfriend seconds after she hears for the first time

Andrea Diaz, a patient at the Mississippi Medical Center, was overwhelmed and started crying as she began to hear for the first time. But on that day, she also experienced other wonderful things.

Andrea had just received cochlear implant surgery – an electronic device that can assist those who have trouble using hearing aids to hear.

When Andrea’s implant was turned on for the first time, she was with her audiologist Dr. Vicki Gonzales, her mother and her boyfriend Kevin Peakman. Andrea said it was “noisy” and “sounds funny” when she heard her mother say how much she loves her daughter.

The girl bursted into tears as soon as she could hear and respond to sounds. And that was when her boyfriend dropped down on one knee and proposed to her.

In a particularly loving moment, Mr Kevin told his girl friend why he decided to pop the question in the consulting room.

“I love you so much and you’re my best friend, baby,” he said. “I wanted to make the first thing you hear me asking you to marry me.”

“Yes,” Andrea tearfully said “I like the ring. I can hear your voice!”
